POSITION SUMMARY
The Tax Manager supports the Firm's traditional tax practice through complex tax research, return review, and client service. This role has a significant technical research component and serves as a resource to partners and engagement teams on complex federal, state, and local tax matters. The Tax Manager will primarily work with corporations, partnerships, and other business entities and will be responsible for researching and documenting tax positions, monitoring legislative and regulatory developments, and providing high-quality tax compliance and technical advisory services.
Salary Range: $125,000 - $150,000 (depending on experience).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical Tax Research
- Independently conduct in-depth federal, state, and local tax research on complex or nonroutine compliance, planning, and reporting matters and develop supportable conclusions based on applicable authority.
- Analyze Internal Revenue Code provisions, Treasury Regulations, IRS guidance, court decisions, and other relevant authority in developing technical conclusions.
- Prepare technical memoranda, written analyses, and client-facing summaries that clearly document tax positions, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Monitor tax law changes, regulatory developments, court decisions, and IRS guidance and communicate the impact to internal teams and clients.
- Evaluate alternative tax treatments and clearly communicate the technical basis, risks, and practical implications of available approaches.
- Serve as a technical resource for partners and engagement teams on complex and nonroutine tax matters.
- Review technical research and written analyses prepared by other members of the tax team and provide guidance on complex issues.
Tax Compliance and Review
- Review and manage the preparation of federal, state, and local tax returns for corporations, partnerships, and other business entities.
- Review workpapers and supporting documentation to ensure quality, completeness, and consistency with firm standards.
- Primary return types include Forms 1120 and 1065, along with related state and local income and franchise tax returns. Experience with Form 990-T and DC Form D-30 is beneficial.
Client Service and Practice Support
- Research and analyze the tax implications of transactions, organizational changes, entity structures, and other significant business activities.
- Participate in client meetings to discuss tax matters, technical issues, and recommendations.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients and engagement teams.
- Respond to client and internal questions regarding tax compliance, technical guidance, and tax planning matters.
- Assist with internal training by sharing technical knowledge, research approaches, and emerging tax developments with tax staff and senior associates.
Technology and Process Improvement
- Utilize CCH Axcess Tax and related platforms to manage tax engagements, workflow, and return preparation.
- Use AI-enabled and traditional tax research tools, including CoCounsel or similar platforms, to improve research efficiency while independently evaluating relevant authority and supporting technical conclusions.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of tax templates, research libraries, technical resources, and firm best practices.

POSITION TYPE
This is a full-time permanent position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Professional office environment with a hybrid work schedule consisting of three days per week in the office. Standard office equipment including computers, dual monitors, and collaboration tools.
TRAVEL
Occasional travel to other Calibre offices, client sites, conferences, or professional development events may be required.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
- CPA license required.
- Five or more years of progressive public accounting tax experience.
- Demonstrated ability to independently research complex federal, state, and local tax matters, evaluate applicable authority, reach well-supported conclusions, and clearly document those conclusions in writing.
- Experience using tax research platforms.
- Experience reviewing business tax returns and related workpapers.
- Proficiency with CCH Axcess Tax and related tax software solutions.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Master of Taxation (MST) or advanced tax coursework.
- Experience with Forms 1120 and 1065 and related state and local income and franchise tax returns.
- Experience with Form 990-T and DC Form D-30 is a plus.
- Experience reviewing technical tax research and supervising or mentoring tax staff.
